The Zika virus has brought the medical condition microcephaly out into the open. While most of us have seen pictures of the babies affected by the condition and have heard the horror stories about mosquitoes spreading disease, most of us know very little about microcephaly’s causes or effects. The following are a few things that everyone should know about microcephaly.
Microcephaly Means “Small Head”
The word “Microcephaly” finds its roots in the Greek language, as a combination of the two words small and head. Microcephaly is not one specific disease, but the condition of being born with a smaller head. The phenomenon of being born with a small head occurs because the brain has stopped growing, so the skull no longer needs to enlarge to accommodate it.
