People of all ages can also succumb to heat related illness if steps are not taken to stay cool and hydrated.
Dress Children Properly
Light colored, loose fitting clothing is best for hot days. Clothing that covers the skin well will help to prevent sun burns. In addition to preventing heat related illness, this can also help to prevent cancer and other skin diseases later on in life.
Never Leave Children in Parked Cars
Parked cars can heat up quickly in the sun, even if the windows are open. Children should never be left alone in parked cars. Parents should be careful about play tents, bounce houses, sheds, and other enclosed outdoor areas that children may play in, as these areas can have a green house effect that can cause extreme temperatures in some cases.
Provide Plenty of Water
Hydrating by drinking water can help to prevent dehydration, but cooling down by bathing, swimming, or taking a shower in cool water can help to prevent heat related illness. Children should be allowed access to fresh drinking water at all times. Children should be supervised carefully when near a pool or other body of water.
Schedule to Beat the Heat
Scheduling activities in the early morning or in the evening can help to prevent children from suffering from heat related illness. However, these are times when bugs are out in full effect, so precautions should be taken to prevent bug bites. If children show any signs of heat related illness or lose consciousness after strenuous activity in hot conditions, medical attention should be sought immediately.
