Obesity is a problem that has been growing among not just adults but our kids, too, for three decades. Yeah, sorry to put a dampener on the festive season, but there’s no time like the present to make a start and maybe even influence your gift purchasing decisions. No doubt the ascent of the digital age has influenced the outcome, as did the television for the generations before. But healthyforkids is excited to share a fun, family solution to obesity called ‘parkrun’. It started in the UK in 2004 when a group of 13 runners decided to meet for a run. Ten years and 8 countries later, it’s still based on the simple, basic principles formed from the start: weekly, free, 5km, for everyone, forever.
Your kids can see their results on the website and will love beating their personal best when what they’re actually doing is running rings around obesity and what a great opportunity set goals to match or beat a whole other country. If there isn’t a parkrun event in your area, start one. If you can organize a carpool schedule, you can this with your eyes closed, standing on your head and sleep deprived from your sick kids. Best of all, it’s a step towards running obesity out of town and your kids will be so tired, you can have some You Time.
