Almost every parent knows the struggle of trying to get a child to eat more fruits and veggies. We painstakingly prepare a meal or snack that we are sure they will like only to have them shun the food when it comes time to eat. This can be frustrating and can make us feel like we are wasting time and money. Often times, we get stuck eating the food just to see it not go to waste. Meanwhile our kids are not getting the nutrition that they should. While the good news is that most kids grow out of the picky eating stage before long, we have compiled a few tips that may help parents get their kids to eat healthy items more readily.
Serve Vegetables First
Our instincts are to serve the entire meal at once, but this may actually be harming your efforts to get your kids to eat healthier. If kids have an option that they view as better, they will eat that instead. Serving nothing but veggies when kids are hungry is a great way to get them to eat more veggies. After a decent amount of the vegetable has been eaten, the proteins and starches can be served.
Serve Fruits for Dessert
If kids are accustomed to having fruit as a treat, it will make them much more receptive to fruit in general. If kids become used to desserts with artificial flavorings, they will be less likely to enjoy and appreciate the natural sweetness. These types of desserts should be saved for special occasions only.
Get Kids into the Kitchen
When kids are involved with meal preparation, they will be much more likely to try the outcome of their efforts. There are plastic knives and many other tools that are made specifically for kids to help in the kitchen. Allowing kids to help select the meal will also make them feel like they have a say in what they are eating.
