Make a Variety of Healthy Snacks Available
Instead of completely eliminating favorites like potato chips, make healthy snacks like nuts, carrot sticks with dip, and fresh grapes easy to grab and eat. Maybe put the potato chips a little out of reach so that the other things are easier to grab. As long as you work with your child to make sure that they like the healthy snacks that you are making available, this approach should gain some traction.
Introduce New Foods in Creative Ways
Picky eaters are often the most difficult to get to latch on to a new diet. Instead of introducing too many things at once and struggling through tears and fights, try to be sensitive to their inhibitions and preferences. Introduce only one new thing at a time and make it fun. Go off of your gut regarding what they like and use that to make it fun. Some kids may like to be involved in helping make the food, while others may find it fun if you cut the food into shapes or make little pictures with it.
Don’t Ban Anything
Banned food is the most desirable thing in the world, whether you are an adult or child. Unless your child has a serious medical condition, you should avoid banning food. Limiting their access to certain foods may escape unnoticed, but if they request something, be accommodating. Allowing them to have their favorites in moderation generally works much better than trying to stop them from eating those foods altogether.
