Crafting with Kids for the Holidays

photo-transfer-woodThe holidays can be expensive and stressful as parents struggle to figure out gifts to give everyone. While children may tell you directly what they want, older relatives and friends are often not as forthcoming. Fortunately, most relatives enjoy heartfelt keepsakes and momentos much more than store bought gifts or generic gift cards. Smart and savvy parents can save a boatload of money on gifts that are sure to impress and delight, while making the experience of crafting the gifts fun and educational for children.

Photo Transfer Gifts

Tranferring photos onto blocks of wood, canvasses, or other surfaces is easy with the right materials. To begin this project, it is necessary to acquire several materials. Once the materials are assembled, the project is simple and can be done in about twenty minutes between two days, making it ideal for even grade school aged children. The materials can all be acquired at a craft store for approximately $20, and afterward the liquids can be used to make countless home-crafted gifts at an expense of about $3 for the desired surface material and photo.

Materials needed:

  • Wood, canvas, or other surface to transfer photo onto
  • Large paint brush
  • Transfer gel, also known as transfer medium
  • Mod podge
  • Laser-printed photo on plain paper
  • Sponge
  • Water

  • Use the paint brush to brush transfer gel directly onto the surface of the laser-printed photo
  • Place photo face down on the wood or canvas
  • Use a flat edge, such as a credit card, to remove air bubbles from between the paper and the wood or canvas
  • Let dry for 24 hours
  • Dab water onto the dried paper using a sponge
  • Use the sponge to peel away the paper, being careful not to disturb the ink on the surface
  • After all of the paper has been removed, let the surface dry completely
  • Use the paint brush to paint the surface with mod podge, so that the image will stay in place over time
  • Give someone a beautiful hand crafted gift
